My name is Sarah Talaat. I am a student at The University of Texas at Austin with a double major in journalism and psychology and a minor in Spanish. People often wonder why I chose these particular areas of study, but to me, the decision was evident: I love writing, and I love talking to people. What better majors exist than journalism and psychology? However, my love of communication was not the only draw for me--I also hope to incorporate international travel into my career path. Travel journalism has thus become the focus I would like to pursue because there is nothing more interesting to me than meeting new people and living in different cultures. You could say I have caught an everlasting case of wanderlust. I believe that psychology would greatly aid in my understanding of people I meet, even if we do not speak the same language, and my fluency in French and (soon to be) in Spanish will allow me to communicate with a huge percentage of the world's population.
After spending my junior year of high school in France through a program called School Year Abroad (SYA), I saw what I wanted for my future: to travel anywhere and everywhere, to really live in the many wonderful cultures in the world, and to share all of my experiences with others. That year, I created another place for myself in the world where I could learn about other places and myself, and where I could pick a place on the map and just go.
In the summer after my senior year of high school, I interned for a family member's lifestyle website, Girl Around Town, where I designed the layout template for their Summer 2012 Shopping Guide and assisted with events and marketing. In the Fall of 2012, I interned with Fons PR in Austin where I aggregated news mentions for clients and assisted with events. Although I loved both of these experiences during which I learned so much, I still felt drawn to journalism and travel.
I blame the wanderlust.
